Student Leadership and Growth

We provide several opportunities for students to grow at an emotional level that gives them the skills to increase their engagement and improve academic performance. Connect Charter School uses two programs to actively support this area of development, Habitudes and Connections, as well as Student Council.

Habitudes

The Habitudes program is based on the Habitudes leadership curriculum developed by Tim Elmore. The program combines images, relatable stores and experiences into a leadership development lesson plan that appeals to young adults. Through it, students learn emotional discipline, life principles, emotional security and other key skills that will help them well into adulthood and certainly through the middle and high school years.

Core Habitudes and topics for middle schoolers include the following ideas, and more:

  • Imagination
  • Perseverance
  • Courage
  • Adaptability
  • Social-Emotional Learning
  • Problem-Solving
  • Positive Self Talk
  • And More!

Connections

Connections (active home room) is a school-designed blend of competitions, mini classes, leadership activities and social skills. It is a foundational component of the Connect vision, which involves nurturing students, building community and fostering a sense of self. Centered in the middle of the day between morning core and afternoon active learning, Connections is a place for kids to relax and have fun while growing their social skills, creating new friendships and increasing their self-esteem. Connection activities include:

Chess | Marsville | Charm School | Foreign Language | Typing | Lunch | Cleaning | Skating and Bowling | Learn to Dance | Long Walks

Connections is a foundational cornerstone of The Connect Charter School. Kids develop real-world skills, grow their social IQ and have fun doing it. It’s one of their favorite parts of their Connect experience — and ours, too!

Student Council

The student council is an elected group of students who represent The Connect School at special events on campus and in the community. Students demonstrate leadership potential, communication skills and high academic standards. They help organize events and keep their Connections class informed. Student representatives are also involved in multiple service projects throughout the school year and are expected to participate actively in school events and projects.

We believe that the student council prepares the members for leadership in a safe environment where they can learn how to be a good citizen. It also introduces the student body to civic engagement and shows them how they can make a difference by getting involved. We are very proud of our student government! It is a privilege to watch these students grow in their knowledge and find new ways to accomplish their goals!
